Vadose Zone Hydrology
Published in Hardcover by Lewis Publishers, Inc. (16 November, 1995)
Author: Daniel B. Stephens
Average review score:

Vadose Zone Hydrology
The basic concepts and theory of vadose zone hydrology is presented. The text is well written and organized. I've found the information on vadose zone monitoring, characterizing, and deep soil-water movement very useful. The author also presents case studies which demonstrate the practical application of the subject matter.

A good geoscience textbook for understanding the vadose zone
I have used Dan Stephens' book as a textbook in a graduate-level Geology class on the vadose zone. It was ideal. A lot of unsaturated zone books have been published in the last several years, but none of the others was suitable for my purposes. Dan is an engaging speaker and teacher with lots of real-world experience, both as a teacher/researcher at New Mexico Tech and as an environmental consultant specializing in vadose zone problems. His experience comes across in this book, as does his personable way of presenting the information. Yes, there are equations. But this is not a soil physics textbook as much as it is a geosciences perspective on the vadose zone. This perspective is based on his extensive experience in arid and semi-arid settings, but some of his comments shed light on vadose zone processes in more humid climates. I should add that his treatment of this dry subject is not "dry", and relatively easy to read given the textbook breadth of material covered. Each paragraph could be expanded into a separate dissertation. Stephens has condensed a wealth of material, both practical and theoretical. I recommend it.

Victorian People and Ideas: A Companion for the Modern Reader of Victorian Literature
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1980)
Author: Richard Daniel Altick
Average review score:

Intelligent and Literature-Centered
I cannot imagine a better "companion" to Victorian literature than this nicely organized book. This is an invaluable guide to anyone who would like to situate their knowledge of Victorian prose and poetry within the era's social/historical zeitgeist. Malthus, dissenters, social reforms, sexuality, class consciousness -- all here. I have found myself returning to this book many times over the years. Kudos to Altick.

A lively and thorough introduction to the Victorian period
I highly recommned this introduction to the values and literature of Victorian Britain. Replete with lively anecdotes and thoughtful analyses, Altick's work makes for an entertaining read even as it educates those just beginning to tackle nineteenth century British history and literature.

A Fantastic Look at WW Two in California
Liz and Dan Krieger know more history than anyone else on the Central Coast and this book is a fine example of why they are so loved in San Luis Obispo County, California. Check this book out for a very personal insightful look at how the big war affected the lives of the folks back home.

Watchmaking
Published in Hardcover by Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications (February, 1982)
Author: George Daniels
Average review score:

The best technical treatise on fine watchmaking
This book contains the complete details of making a George Daniels watch, including the methods of fabricating and finishing every single part in the watch. George Daniels is thought by many to be the premier watchmaker in the world today, and in this book he details the methods he uses to make each component of his watches. Also included is a detailed description of the operation of gear trains, complications, and escapements, including the Daniels co-axial escapement. If you have any aspirations to watchmaking or just want to see how the absolute best are made, this is the definitive book. Wonderful color plates and technical drawings.

A step by step account by the most creative Watchmaker alive
George Daniels, residing on the Isle of Man, (UK) is not only one of a handfull of people alive today who regularly make one-of-a-kind watches completly from strach by themselves (including dial, case, movement, hands etc), but he unquestionably is the most creative of the few who are truely "watchmakers" (rather than watch repaireres or workers in a watch factory.

The republishing of "Watchmaking", after it has been out of print for many years must be one of the outstanding events of this year in horological book publishing. Every serious watch collector around the world, who had been lusting for his own copy after seeing copies of older watchcollecting friends can now aford to buy his or her own copy, rather than pay the outrageous prices at antiquarian booksellers.

The book is undoubtedly the most important volume in currently in print (was promised for Jan 1999, finally first copies delivered in April 1999)for horologists and enthusiasts about craftsman made watches anywhere.

A "must" for anybody interested in watchmaking techniques and watchmaking technology.

The Well Adjusted Horse: Equine Chiropractic Methods You Can Do
Published in Paperback by Brookline Books (January, 1999)
Author: Daniel R. Kamen
Average review score:

User - Friendly Handbook
I found the book easy to follow and understand for the layman. The author did not talk over my head. The step by step procedures made sure you were comfortable at each step before you actually performed the various adjustments. If one did not feel comfortable adjusting their own horse, at the least the book made a more informed horse owner when you talk to your chiropractor and made the whole process less mysterious.

Melissa

Helps you to care for your horse
This is excellent. Clear diagrams and explanations. It is aimed at the non-chiropractor, so techniques are described from that perspective, but is excellent for Chiropractors too. A good summary of the basic anatomy and a very practical book. The techniques work, too!

What Do Economists Contribute?
Published in Paperback by Palgrave Macmillan (20 March, 2001)
Author: Daniel B. Klein
Average review score:

A superb introduction to an esoteric subject.
Economists deal in an esoteric subject that is often beyond the grasp of the general public, who are often confused with the chronic presentation of conflicting opinions by credentialed and experienced economists on almost every economic issue of our day. In What Do Economists Contribute?, editor Daniel Klein has compiled outstanding essays from nine great economists of this century (Friedreich Hayek, Ronald Coase, Thomas Schelling, Gordon Tullock, Israel Kirzner, Frank Graham, William Hutt, Clarence Philbrook, and D. McCloskey) to address the existential issue of "how do we contribute to human betterment?" from an economists perspective. the result is a lively, informative, engaging discourse that provides insight and a significant clarification of the role the evolving science of economics plays in our understanding of why things happen in the ways that they do. What Do Economists Contribute? is highly recommended reading for lay readers as well as students of economics, and has a great deal of substantive value for even experienced, practicing economists as well.

A timely book that needs to be read by all.
Daniel Klein, Professor of Economics at Santa Clara University, brings together some of the best minds in economics on a very important and unsettled issue: what do economists contribute to society? In today's world, most economists do not care about educating the general public as to how government policies work or how economics can address and solve many social problems; rather, they are concerned with demonstrating their mathematical "wizardry." Unfortunately, economists who can explain principles to the layman are not taken seriously; their work is viewed as not being rigorous enough. The "Everyman," to use Klein's term, needs to understand the beauty and power of economics. If economists stopped preaching to the choir and stopped their quest to be known as great mathematicians, then maybe people would actually come to know the power of economic reasoning. This book is enlightening and should be read by economists and noneconomists alike.
